Happy Turkey Day, Merry Thanksgiving, Joyous Black Friday

Posted on November 24th, 2006 in Life by geek

Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays, friends.  Thanks for staying with me this long.

–Watches tumbleweed go by–

Anywho, tis the day after turkey day, and you know what that means?  Sales.  Black Friday Sales.  Why am I up at 3:48am?  Because I’ve decided to go to camp out my local store and buy absolutely nothing.  That’s right.  You read right.  I’m going for naught for myself.

Why you ask?  Because I have friends who want things.  Just random stuff here and there… but its enough for me to camp out in front of the local Fry’s, and to not sleep a wink.  **sips more coffee**

Will I buy stuff for myself? Sure I will.  I’ve seen plenty of useless crap I can buy on the advertisements.  But do I really need anything?  Not really.  I’m already listening to the Eagles on the mp3 player I’ve been shopping round for (I went with the iPod 80GB) and I’m typing this on my 24″ LCD.  There really isn’t stuff I need… but meh.

I did the same thing with the X360 release.  I mean, did I really really want the thing?  No.  But instead I drag 3 of my friends to hang out in front of a Best Buy about a hundred miles away in the freezing cold, just to get something that was sought after.  That’s the real fun.  The anticipation, the excitement, the buzz… a heady drink it is.

I’m gearing up to head out to Fry’s.  Wallet, Check.  iPod, Check.  Coffee mug… Check.  Scarf… check.  Buzz on… go.

The weekend of releases

Posted on November 20th, 2006 in Wii, Gaming by geek

Ah, the week before Thanksgiving, and you know what that means…. Gaming console releases.

If you know me, you know I can’t stand Sony Products, and I still can’t. I haven’t really seen the PS3 yet, and I probably won’t be for a while, considering that all my friends who bought one are putting it directly on ebay for some idiot to pay 2k for.

As far as the Wii goes, I think I’m moving toward less noise, more signal. I thought that the Wii can go either of two paths. Gimmicky, or frigging cool. I mean, how much replay value does swinging your arms around with a remote control have besides being able to laugh at whomever is playing? But I think my friend playing Trama Center changed my opinion. The control mechanism seemed very innovative, and although I didn’t play the game, it seemed really cool. However, how many games are like trama center? I mean… not that many games are going to take to using the candy bar Wiimote as a pointer.

Anyway. I wish more people would read this thing. It would make me want to write in it more.

Ipod v Zune Comment posted on Gizmodo

Posted on this thread: Gizmodo- Zune vs. iPod: The Final Word On Who Should Get Your Money

I’ve been watching the Zune V. Ipod debate for about a week now, looking to figure out what player is best for me. In the end, it comes down to:

iPod Pro: Proven design, Availability of addons, can use as hardrive, random gimmicks that seem cool to have but are just gimmicks (outlook calendaring, games that suck to play on an iPod.)
iPod Cons: it’s an iPod, needs a case, needs more addon adapters to do what I want it to do.

Zune Pro: It’s new, It’s different, Bigger screen, apparently better sound quality (I haven’t had a chance to listen to them side by side so who knows), has fm tuner (which is a feature I want and will have to pay 50 bucks to get on the flip side).
Zune Con: Unproven, but promising. Doesn’t work as a hd.

I think the biggest thing for me is the lack of hd capability. Otherwise, I’d go zune just to be different from the apple fanbois. And that’s the hard decision for me. New toy or hard drive.

IMHO, I think that zune, as a first offering, is damned good. It took years to get to where Apple is, and the fact that Zune did so well at the get go against iPod is great. People bring up these lame arguments (zune is a knockoff, zune marketplace doesn’t have videos/as much content , zune looks bad, zune doesn’t play itunes drm) but those are all things that Apple worked through. Apple didn’t start with 3 mil tracks on itunes, it didn’t start with a huge variety of movies (besides… 2.5 inc screen + feature length movie = squintfest), Apple didn’t always have hundreds of widgets and wingdings for it. Granted, when you look at the hard facts, I think I’ll concede that the iPod is probably a better player, but not by much. The only thing that has really stopped me from picking up a Zune on launch was that it didn’t use the UMS format and could double as a HD. If Zune had that in 2nd gen, I’d probably be persuaded to switch.

It’s always fun to bash M$, but the amount of bias there is toward iPod v Zune is ridiculous.

Ipod v5 vs Zune v1

Man.  In the war of mp3 players, there seems to be the huge giant iPod, and then the others.  I’ve been looking at the possiblity of getting an mp3 player/personal video player, but basically… it seems it comes down to iPod, and a bigger iPod.

Zune is the other buzz magnet right now, though the buzz has been largely negative.  Which makes me want to have M$’s player succeed.  I mean, the hateful and ultimately fanboi comments that you see floating around the net are made by obvious iPod fanatics, who have nothing constructive to say besides the product sucks.  It would be one thing if they actually had zunes and had ipods and compared them, but considering the product doesn’t get released until today, most of the claims or baseless.  Some of the criticism is just straight up retarded, like “oh. Microsoft is just stealing Apple’s ideas.”  The most extreme, and also the most hilarious has got to be this one:

Matt @ Nov 13th 2006 5:11PM

waste of cardboard ink and plastic. the should just sell them in the brown boxes, well at least the brown one cause it looks like shit.

zune = ipod knockoff
zune headphones - ipod headphone knockoff
zune usb = ipod usb knockoff
zune software = itunes knockoff

COME ONE MS MAKE SOMETHING OF YOUR OWN DESIGN

That one was from the Endgadget comments section.  Apparently, any mp3 player is an ipod knockoff.  mp3 players that use headphones… yep.  Ipod Knockoff.  USB as a connection medium.. holy crap !  KNOCKOFF!  Oh… and has software to control it….

For the most part, this is the kind of retarded stuff floating out there.  There are a couple of unbiased critiques out there, but not really anything solid enough (like tech specs) to speak off.  Many handwavy comments about “oh. it sounds fine.”  What does that mean people?

I am kind of leaning toward the zune anyway, just because it won’t be what everyone else has.  Perhaps it’s time to  “Think Different.”

The only thing that really kills the zune for me is the fact that it can’t be used as an external hd.  Fix that problem… and then perhaps I’ll own a zune.

You have to wonder though, why hasn’t anyone made a pda with a hd in it, and does wifi and phone stuff.  That would be like the holy grail.

Boring Saturday Afternoon

Posted on November 11th, 2006 in Life by geek

Yes… One of those days where nothing seems interesting to do.  It’s cold and rainy, and all you can think of to do is to call up all your friends and then find out they are busy.

And you just are consigned to sit in a chair, and stare at the wall.  Sure.  There could be things you should do, but none of them seem appealing.  So you just sit.  And wait.  And blankly stare at a wall.

Yep.  Wall staring.  Totally where it’s at.
