Last night, I went played games with some friends of mine. At one point, one player makes a terrible move, and when asked why he did it: “Oh, because it’s cool and funny.” When informed that there were better plays that were fairly obvious, and that actually moved the game along in his favor, he replies: “That’s not the point, I play to have fun.”
You know, that’s garbage. If you are going to play a game, then play it toward the goal of the game; that is, win. Making plays that are cool and interesting is all in fine; I’m quite a fan of intriguing strategies. However, the moment you make plays not toward the spirit of the game, then you waste everyone’s time. Everyone else decided to give up a segment of their time to enjoy a game and play by the rules of the game. By disregarding the rules and the goal, and doing shit because you feel like it, you not only fail at the spirit of the game, but you cheapen the experience of the game for the rest of the parties.
