Gaming Log for this week and Happy Chinese New Year

Well… other than the lack of progress in WoW (I’m still stuck at 53, damn slow grind), I’ve been playing a lot of board games this three day weekend.

Friday, we got in a game of San Juan, and I taught people how to play Elasund, and Relationship Tightrope. People were skeptical of Relationship Tightrope from the beginning, but in the end, everyone felt that it was pretty light and whimsical. Elasund was pretty well received as well.

Saturday was a day out with the family; I visited my relatives for most of the day. Haven’t been to seem my grandparents and some of my aunts for quite a while, so it was somewhat enjoyable; though I’m not usually one to like visits. That night, a couple of us got together for a little trial game of Power Grid. For the most part, people were nervous about playing at first, but once they saw how simple the system was, they warmed up to it. We capped the evening with a game of PR (which I lost).

Sunday was the trip down to John’s house, and my friend Tim tagged along. We got in games of “To Court the King”, A.K.A Euro-yahtzee, Lowenhertz, Pitch Car, and Imperial. Euro-yahtzee was light, as always, where Tim smashed us all with 9 of a kind sixes, whereas Lowenhertz was a John beatdown of epic proportions. I really just didn’t get the game and ended up way way way back in last place. Pitch Car is an interesting one, where there’s a wooden track, and then you flick a little puck (like the way you flick someone’s ear) around the track without flipping over or rocketing off the track. Stupid fun.

Imperial was the big buster, where even the concept of the game was complex. We’re all billionares backing countries, but you don’t actually play a country. Who your support is kind of fluid; one turn you may be backing France, the next you could be backing Germany. We all got smashed down, not by each other, but by the fact that we misinterpreted the rules (more like forgot) in many ways, and never really got a chance to play the game as it’s supposed to be played. Definitely another game we will have to come back to, with 5 players.

Anyway, Gung Hay Fat Choy, Sun neen Fai Lok.
