Weekend Recap- Teenage Angst Edition

March 26th, 2007 by geek Leave a reply »

Howdy folks…
Brief Highlights:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Metacritic score: 41) I believe the Washington Post has it best:

“The upshot is that the film is technically superb and quite enjoyable as long as you don’t bang your head against the plot. ”

    Stephen Hunter

It’s a fun movie, though not as fun as the 300. Sadly, it’s not as cold in New York as it is in Sparta, though I guess I’m really not that interested in the coldness of turtles. However, April seems to have discovered the fountain of youth, and is drawn like a less busty Lara Croft. Apparently she’s been going out with Casey Jones, who got a less creepy, and a lot more good looking as opposed to going for the Freddy Kruger look. My score: 66/100. Not great American cinema, but not something I would hate bringing a little brother to. Very Meh.

  • Gaming Bohnanza
Me and a couple of folks made a road trip and played a plethora of games:

    • Coloretto
      • A decidedly simple game with plenty of strategy, but plenty of interaction between players.
      • Basically at it’s heart, an auction/value management game where you separate cards of different value for your opponents to choose.
    • Imperial
      • A decidedly unsimple game that has a lot of interaction between players, but has wierd mechanics.
      • Basically you act as a shadowy investor investing in the governments of entire nations, and use your political influence for personal gain. However… you’re not stuck with one nation, you can invest in many nations and control them by outbuying everyone else. A great game… but a bit too complex for the casual crowd. Highly recommend if you can handle it.
    • Pizzaro
      • Strange little game that involves bidding for different people for points. I was… kind of a bit disenchanted with the game. It’s very… meh.
    • TransAmerica
      • A Classic. Simple little game that involves building tracks between cities. It’s on my to buy list.
      • We only got one game of this in, even though its over in about 3 mins
    • Shogun
      • A territory control game that is diguised as a war game set in feudal Japan.
      • I’m still not sure I like this game all that much. I mean I own it, the more I play, the more I realize that the game is more political than not. The game is based on this strange, “throw little cubes in tower” mechanic that basically normalizes loses and wins. However, because the combat system is so simple, there aren’t really any real tactics. Basically.. if someone decides to attack your army, they sacrifice their army, but all the other players look on and go.. wow.. great… both of them players are weak now. I haven’t really thought about the implications of that reality… but I’ll ponder it out.
    • Niagara
      • A fun little family game that I doubt any 8 year old be able to play efficiently
      • Under a candy coated cool board with little canoes and a cool plastic disk falling off waterfalls system underlies a somewhat complex mathematical system. Theoretically you could analyze the play and come up with better educated guesses, but meh.. who cares?! Throwing kayak’s off Niagara is more fun.

WoW Update: Reyia is now lvl 67. I’m planning on 70 by end of week. I hope.
Here I reach a crossroads with this toon. On the one hand, I like tanking. On the other hand… I’m probably better at healing… and probably more useful… decisions decisions.
